As summer break draws to a close, (Princess only has two weeks left!) we are also finishing our last two weeks of our Passport to the World learning activities. This week, the kids have been learning about our friendly neighboring country to the north, Canada. We learned a little about the differences that our countries have (states vs. provinces, queen & prime minister vs. president) and the children learned that several of their favorite celebs and athletes are Canadians. The most fun, however, was when we played a warm California summer's household version of Canada's favorite sport, hockey.
We played a fun little game of broom hockey! The kids each got a broom as their hockey stick, a little purple ball was the 'puck' and two ice cream buckets qualified as the goals.
There were not many points scored in this game, I'm guessing a larger goal would have been easier to work with. Curls joined in real quick despite it being his nap time, and really had a lot of fun hitting the ball around with his own Curls sized broom.
After some fun broom hockey, it was time for art! We decided to do some Canadian flag inspired leaf prints with leaves found around our yard. First the kids gathered the leaves, then they gathered the paint materials.
Next, the kids painted one side of their favorite leaves with paint, making sure to cover the whole side thoroughly.
Then they pressed the painted side of the leaf down onto their paper...
So when they peeled the leaf back off, it left a pretty print on the paper!
After using the red paint in honor of the red leaf on the Canadian flag, the children picked out and used a few more colors until their leaf print artwork was done.
I'd say they turned out pretty cute, eh?
