Salt Dough Fossil Imprints

Ever since Dirty D made fossils in school during his dinosaur unit, he has wanted to make more here at home, and his excitement was certainly contagious!  The kids invited a friend of theirs to join in the fun as we made some beautiful salt dough fossil imprints. I just love how these turned out, so simple and fun to make!

First thing we did was make the good old Salt Dough: 2 cups flour, 1 cup salt, 1 cup warm water.
A.K.A the "Always on Hand" dough.

The children had fun working together to stir and mix the dough until it was no longer sticky.

Then they each tore off a good chunk of dough and flattened them out into a disc shape.  They used some little plastic dinosaur skeleton pieces pressed into the dough as their fossils.  Ours came in a dinosaur themed prek kit that I had purchased several years back, but you can easily find similar ones in the toy section of your local store...I've even seen some at the dollar store.

More imprints!
When the children were happy with their imprint arrangements, I let them dry out a little bit before baking them in the oven at 200 degrees for about 45 minutes. (May require longer or shorter baking times, depending on the thickness of your fossils.)

These are the results.  They look awesome!
