Ice, Ice Baby! Cool Play for Summer Days

Looking at our calendar the other day, I was sad to realize that our summer is more than half way over!  Summer just passes too quickly these days, before I know it school will be starting up all over again.  So far we have had quite a bit of fun, and I still have many activities planned for the rest of our vacation time together; but for the past few days we have been really laid back, reading and enjoying the simpler things.

Sometimes as moms we can find ourselves getting caught up in making sure the kids have a great summer vacation, planning activities and excursions and play dates and the like.  It can be hard to step back and remember that the simple, off the top of our head ideas can be just as much fun as any thoroughly planned out activity.  I was reminded of this today when I was getting a cup of ice for a smoothie (I get ideas at the weirdest times!) and got the idea to use ice in our outdoor play!

Curls sensory table has been filled with water for the past couple days, along with some cups, spoons, and strainers.  I haven't ever added any ice too it, so it was going to be something new for him!  At first I thought it would bother him and he would get upset because of the cold, but he loved it.
First he tried several times to pick up the pieces of ice, but they kept sliding through his fingers and floating away.
Then he decided to splash in the water while watching the ice move around from his splash waves!
He did eventually 'catch' a piece of ice, but it took a lot of work!

Upon seeing the icy addition to Curls sensory table, Princess and Dirty D wanted to join in the fun, but I had another idea that I figured would be pretty entertaining for them:

Ice skating action figures!  Oh gosh, they had so much fun with this...and all I had to do was get some little action figures from Dirty D's room and stick them in an ice cube tray with water to freeze.  When they were all frozen I took one of our larger cookie sheets outside and set it in the sun for about ten minutes, to let it get nice and hot.
Break the little guys out of their icy prisons and set them up on the hot cookie sheet.  The ice began melting instantaneously, so that the figures would dance and slide around, just like they were ice skating!

These ice skating characters turned the kids into ice skating announcers, with the kids adding their own little musical numbers for the figures to skate to and commentary about the "routines".  It was too funny!
